Tens
of billions of forest tree are planted globally each year.
Unfortunately, several billion trees die after planting
due to lack of water, either during the transportation and
planting of the seedling, resulting in a low quality seedling
to plant, or low soil moisture after the seedling is planted.
The use of Horta-SorbŪ SM as a root treatment when the seedling
are lifted, or as a mix amendment if the seedlings are container
grown, greatly increases the viability of the seedling in
out plantings. As a bare root dip one pound will
treat 20,000 to 40,000 forest seedlings.
The ways to use Horta-SorbŪ in the forestry market are as
follows:
As a moisture holder in lifting, storing,
and shipping bare root seedlings one pound will treat 20,000
to 40,000 forest seedlings depending on the size of the
seedling. With Christmas tree growers/planters will
likely use more because of the larger stock handled but
should still treat several thousand per pound.
1. Dipping Roots - Mix Horta-SorbŪ SM at the rate of 1 lb.
per 30 to 35 gallons of water to form a root dip the
consistency of a heavy gravy. Adjust water to gel ratio to
achieve and maintain this consistency.
2. Spraying Roots - Remove screens in equipment (Use other
measures to protect equipment. Prepare mixture the same as
Dipping Roots but make it less viscous.

A. Bare Root - Dip* the roots of the tree in a gel prepared
at the rate of 1 lb. Horta-SorbŪ SM per 20-30 gallons of
water before planting into the ground on out plantings
(making sure that the maximum amount of gel adheres to the
roots).
B. Containerized - Dip* the root ball in a gel prepared at
the rate of 1 lb. Horta-SorbŪ SM per 20-30 gallons of water.
Should this not be practical distribute 1/4 gram of
Horta-SorbŪ MD into the planting hold as the root ball is
planted.

*The absorbency rate of Horta-SorbŪ is dependent by water
quality, i.e., the harder the water the lower is the
absorbency. When mixing Horta-Sorb with water lightly
sprinkle the material in water that has been stirred and is
still moving. If a water hose is available simply apply the
Horta-SorbŪ directly into a wide-angle fog of water spray
from an ordinary gardening hose nozzle.
The consistency of the gel is also critically important.
The gel should be as thick as possible but still loose
enough to prevent damaging roots when dipped into the
container holding the gel. A thick gel permits more
Horta-SorbŪ to cling to the roots, while a thin gel will not
provide desired root protection.
