Mix
any of the Horta-SorbŪ products with potting mix at the
rate of 2 pounds per cubic yard. This rate is an average.
For highly drained mixes, or mixes that you want to hold
even more water in use a higher rate, i.e., 3 pounds, etc.

If your
mixing equipment leaves a lot to be desired you may consider
adding water to the Horta-SorbŪ before mixing with your
potting mix. This will result in working with more volume
of gel and will be easier to see the end result of your
mixing exercise. When mixing the gel what you see is what
you get. When mixing dry what you see is 100th of what you
will get when water is added.
Particle size of Horta-SorbŪ should be considered when choosing
which product to use. The general rule of thumb is logically
- large containers, large particle size, and so on.

Please
read in the General
Discussion section to learn how a superabsorbent works
with your potting mix and the benefits available to your
business.
Authors
Comment: The use of superabsorbents in commercial mixes
has grown steadily over the past decade. Large commercial
peat companies and numerous regional companies, especially
in Florida, now offer mixes that contain superabsorbents,
generally at the rate of 2 pounds per cubic yards.
I personally have visited many nurseries in the Homestead
(Miami) area that contract grow for large brokers which
now require superabsorbents in their mix. The cost of including
a superabsorbent into your mix is many times made up in
cost savings at the nursery level, and marketability, and
reduced maintenance, at the retail level.

A.
Dipping Roots - Mix Horta-SorbŪ SM at the rate of 1 lb.
per 30 to 35 gallons of water to form a root dip the consistency
of a heavy gravy. Adjust application rate to achieve this
consistency.
B. Spraying Roots - Remove screens in equipment. Prepare
mixture the same as Dipping Roots.
Be
sure to consider our
mycorrhizal
inoculants for this application. Mycorrhizal
roots INCREASE SURVIVAL. "Our cocktail" also
contains the Horta-SorbŪ SM.
OUT
PLANTINGS
A.
Bare Root - Dip* the roots of the tree in a gel prepared
at the rate of 1 lb. Horta-SorbŪ SM per 20-30 gallons
of water before planting into the ground on out planting
(insuring that the maximum amount of gel adheres to the
roots).
B. Containerized - Dip* the root ball in a gel prepared
at the rate of 1 lb. Horta-SorbŪ SM per 20-30 gallons
of water. Should this not be practical distribute 1/4
gram of Horta-SorbŪ MD into the planting hold as the root
ball is planted.
*The
absorbency rate of Horta-SorbŪ is dependent by water quality,
i.e., the harder the water the lower is the absorbency.
When mixing Horta-Sorb with water lightly sprinkle the
material in water that has been stirred and is still moving.
If a water hose is available simply apply the Horta-SorbŪ
directly into a wide-angle fog of water spray from an
ordinary gardening hose nozzle.
The consistency of the gel is also critically important.
The gel should be as thick as possible but still loose
enough to prevent damaging roots when dipped into the
container holding the gel. A thick gel permits more Horta-SorbŪ
to cling to the roots, while a thin gel will not provide
desired root protection.

Add two (2) level tablespoons of Horta-SorbŪ MD to a gallon
of water. Let sit for 2 hours. Drain off excess water
and mix resulting gel nuggets with your potting mix at
the ratio of one (1) part gel to two (2) parts potting
mix.
Dry Method: Add 1 level teaspoon of Horta-SorbŪ
MD to each quart of potting mix. Mix thoroughly and pot
up your plants as usual. Water plants frequently during
the first week to insure that the Horta-SorbŪ LG fully
